Rick starts to teach the people in the camp how to use the guns, Andrea stands out as the fastest learner. Carl is allowed to carry a gun much to his mother displeasure.
Donna express her disgust that Dale the elder man is living in the same camper as the young sisters Andrea and Amy.

Rick tells Shane about his doubts, staying as close to the city as they are but Shane dismisses them. Rick decides if they have to to stay they all need to be armed so he and Glenn head to the city to get guns. Rich and Glenn ask Jim where the closest gun store is and to their dismay they find it far into the city. The two men decide to go anyway and on the way Glenn tells Rick about how Jim got out of the city, Jim's family had acted as a human shield for Jim and he saw them get ripped apart as he escaped.

Rick Grimes, Sheriff of a small town in Kentucky awakes in a hospital. Comatose after being shot while on duty, Rick finds the world abandoned of all things living and is faced with walking undead, who attack him on sight. He returns home to find his family, son Carl and wife Lori, gone. He meets his new neighbor, who points him towards Atlanta. After retrieving supplies from the abandoned Police Station, Rick sets off to Atlanta to search for his family.

Rick Grimes drives his police car to Atlanta where he hopes to find his wife and son. He was told that the government had setup safe zones in large cities after the dead came to life and starting killing. On the way the police car runs out of gas causing Rick to search for a new ride which he finds in a nearby farm. Now on horseback Rick continues to Atlanta and upon getting there finds himself surrounded by undead. While fighting a losing battle that had already killed the horse Rick is saved by a young man who leads him outside of the city. The young man tells Rick that the government failed to protect the people in the cities and most of the people were now undead. Rick discovers his wife and son at the camp the young man had taken him to.
